Tuesday, May 21

What Is UTeach?

This session is for anyone interested in learning more about the UTeach secondary STEM teacher preparation program. Presenters will describe the hallmarks of UTeach, its organizational structure, the roles of key program staff and faculty, and its partnership with local K–12 schools. The presenters will also review the impact of national UTeach expansion and the role of the UTeach Institute in supporting new UTeach programs.

Wednesday, May 22 — Morning

We’re Doing UTeach. Now What?
9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

In this session, participants will receive clarification on the array of support services offered by the UTeach Institute during and after program implementation, in addition to receiving helpful guidance on activities with relevant timelines for new staff and faculty involved in UTeach program implementation.

What We Learned in Year One
10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

We will highlight the positives, address the barriers, and delve into our challenges in beginning our first-year program in 2023 at the University of West Alabama. We will discuss the Step 1, Step 2, and Knowing and Learning course, adjusting the course syllabus and schedule to match state requirements, and managing student field placements. We will also give an overview of how we started recruiting students to grow our program.

USEA Recruitment Panel

Come participate in a panel discussion targeting recruitment of students in the UTeach model, freshmen through post bacs.  The panel will have representatives from both long-established sites and those just getting started!  Bring your ideas and struggles about recruiting and hear what others have done to meet their own recruiting challenges.  Topics discussed will include high yield strategies for getting your message out, recruiting at community colleges, and using student ambassadors. USEA recruitment resources will be highlighted as well.

This session is a hands-on workshop focusing on fundraising techniques, prospect research, donor stewardship, and grant writing for your UTeach program. Learn practical skills to enhance your fundraising efforts and drive impact in the field

One Size Fits All? Crafting a University-Specific Recruiting Message
2:15 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.

Recruiting can make or break a program, and with a national decline in teacher education enrollment, UTeach programs must consider unique ways to market their product to prospective students. A “one-size fits all” recruiting strategy can only go so far. This generation must see themselves in your program as well as the benefits it can bring. Participants will have the opportunity to work with the UAB team to co-construct an adapted recruiting message. 

The Gift of Gratitude: Perspectives on Fundraising in STEM Education
4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Dean Curran will moderate a panel discussion with funders and development officers offering insights in STEM education fundraising. Acquire invaluable perspectives on funder outreach, donor stewardship, and grant reporting.

Thursday, May 23

From the Ground Up: Recruitment in Year One and Beyond

The AUMTeach team at Auburn University at Montgomery will discuss their approach to recruitment and lead attendees in a reflection and goal setting exercise with emphasis on increasing intercollegiate collaboration, on-campus visibility, and online engagement.
